Adding Fuel

The Dragons have scored more points than anybody in the YFFL. Apparently, 497 was not enough to leave the roster alone.

The NFC East leaders acquired Justin Jefferson from the Thugs on Thursday, sending rookie running back Jeremiyah Love and their own 2027 second-round pick in return. Jefferson joins Ja'Marr Chase and A.J. Brown in a receiving group that was already giving opponents plenty to consider.

At 6-2, the Dragons are adding to a contender. At 3-5, the Thugs are putting some of Jefferson's value toward next year. Both teams have won their last two games. They have reached rather different conclusions about what should come next.

Room for One More

The Dragons enter Week 9 with three straight wins, a four-game division lead and 39 more points than the Merry Men, the league's next-highest scoring team. Sunday's 78-40 victory over the Buddies came with 20 points from D'Andre Swift and 18 apiece from Trevor Lawrence and Bhayshul Tuten. Chase added 10. Finding points has not been a pressing concern.

Jefferson gives them another place to look. His 335 receiving yards, four touchdowns and one two-point conversion have produced 32 YFFL points through eight weeks. Those are useful numbers, though hardly the sort that explain his reputation by themselves. The Dragons are counting on the player being better than his first-half total.

There have been glimpses. Jefferson scored 16 in the Thugs' season opener against the Merry Men, half of his total to date. His new team would welcome a few more afternoons like that, particularly once the games start deciding who gets to keep playing.

The price includes a young back the Dragons selected for the future and a second-round pick they will no longer get to use. Kenneth Walker III, Swift and Tuten remain in the backfield, making Love an asset they could afford to move. Chase, Brown and Jefferson now share a receiving room. The lineup decisions should be interesting. So should the complaints from whoever draws them in December.

A Little Less Love

For the Thugs, the timing is more complicated. They have followed an 0-4 start with three wins in four games, most recently beating the Mallards 56-41. Malik Willis and Brandon Aubrey supplied 12 points apiece, while Jaylen Warren added 10. There has finally been some progress to protect.

Love will have to help later. Arizona placed him on NFL injured reserve Tuesday after another ankle injury against Dallas, ruling him out for at least the Cardinals' next four games. The Thugs are acquiring a running back with considerable promise and an immediate shortage of available Sundays.

The third overall pick in April's NFL Draft, Love has 268 rushing yards, 44 receiving yards and two touchdowns in the YFFL records, good for 20 points. Eight of those came in his debut, when the Dragons beat the Boys 79-41. His rookie season has become considerably less comfortable since.

The attraction is what follows the recovery. Love gives the Thugs another young back alongside Breece Hall and Cam Skattebo, with Warren already contributing. The additional second-rounder gives them another opportunity in the 2027 draft. Its position will depend on how the Dragons finish, which makes this one of the few parts of the deal where the Thugs might prefer their former receiver to have a quiet December.

They also activated Travis Hunter from YFFL injured reserve Thursday. With Jefferson gone, Hunter joins Rome Odunze, Wan'Dale Robinson and Ricky Pearsall among the receivers being asked to keep the current season moving. At 3-5, the Thugs still have six regular-season games left. Trading their biggest name does not make those games disappear.

Different Decembers

The Dragons get the more immediate help. Jefferson can join a team already leading its division comfortably, while Love's injury made him unlikely to contribute during much of the remaining regular season. A second-round pick is a meaningful cost, but the Dragons have put themselves in a position to spend something on this year's chances.

The Thugs need a longer return. A healthy Love and a productive draft pick could make the package worthwhile. For now, they have exchanged an established receiver for a recovery timetable and another selection.

Eight weeks into the season, the Dragons had the league's best offense and plenty of breathing room. They have decided to make the room a little warmer.
