Running Wild

Jon Kinsman, YFFL Commissioner

After just two running backs topped 100 points in 2023, the 2024 season marked a true resurgence for the RB position in the YFFL, with eight backs eclipsing the century mark.

Week 8 continued the trend with a massive showing - nine running backs scored in double digits and four topped 20 points (including two from the White Guys alone!). In a league that's been dominated by passing, the ground game has reasserted itself in dramatic fashion.

Leading the charge was RB Jonathan Taylor, who's putting together a season for the ages. Taylor has now scored 20+ points four times (including three in the past four weeks) and continues to carry the Big Boys on his back as they battle for a playoff spot in a crowded NFC. His 24-point outburst was enough to take down the Orangutangs, who were fresh off an 83-point explosion the previous week.

The White Guys' dynamic duo of James Cook and rookie RJ Harvey also made noise, each scoring 20 points to topple the defending champion Merry Men. It's been a rough stretch for the Merry Men, who have now had a staggering 161 points scored against them in the past two games. Meanwhile, RB Breece Hall powered the Thugs with 20+ points in a win over the Huskers. The quietly surging Thugs have now won three straight and currently sit in the AFC Wild Card spot if the season ended today.

Elsewhere around the league, the Buddies kept rolling with a decisive win over the Dragons to move to 6-1-1, while the Mallards bounced back from consecutive losses to defeat the Llamas and remain the league's highest-scoring team. And don't look now - QB Jalen Hurts and the Chickens, despite a roster ravaged by injuries, have won two straight and remain firmly in the hunt for an NFC playoff berth as the second half of the season rolls on.
