Brock & Roll

Jon Kinsman, YFFL Commissioner

December 31, 2024

Over two decades ago, a player named Brock dashed the playoff hopes of owner Steve Dugas and his Merry Men. Fast forward to Super Bowl XXXII, and it was another Brock - quarterback Brock Purdy - who lifted the franchise to its third championship title and its first since 2011.

A Comfortable Lead, but a Fierce Challenge Ahead

Heading into Monday night, the Merry Men were in a strong position, thanks to solid performances from running back Bijan Robinson and wide receiver Malik Nabors. Robinson, who had already contributed 14 points, and Nabors, who added another 18, helped the team build a 23-point lead. In most situations, that would be more than enough for a comfortable victory.

However, Dugas and his Merry Men were well aware that they still had to fend off a formidable trio from the Brothers: Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Sam LaPorta. This trio had been a powerhouse, averaging over 43 points in the first two games of the playoffs. While they didn’t quite hit that mark in the championship game, they still came close, combining for a respectable 40 points. St. Brown and LaPorta each scored once, while Goff threw for three touchdowns to cap off a valiant playoff run for the Brothers.

Brock Purdy Answers the Call

With the pressure mounting, Brock Purdy - who has become the steady backbone of the Merry Men offense - answered the call in dramatic fashion. The undrafted quarterback, who was picked up off the waiver wire during the final week of the 2022 season, threw for four touchdowns and amassed 28 points, matching a career high. His performance was enough to keep the Merry Men ahead and secure their third championship banner.

Purdy’s emergence as the centerpiece of the Merry Men’s offense has been nothing short of remarkable. After taking over as the starting quarterback in the 2023 season, he has consistently delivered strong performances, earning the trust of owner Steve Dugas and solidifying his place as the face of the franchise. The passing of the torch from former franchise QB Matthew Stafford was officially cemented when Stafford was traded in Week 11 of the 2024 season. Much like Stafford, Purdy has now earned the ultimate honor: being named Super Bowl MVP.

A Bright Future for the Merry Men

The victory marked a triumphant moment for Dugas and the Merry Men, but it also signaled the beginning of what could be a new era of dominance in the YFFL. With an exciting crop of young talent at every position, including Robinson, Nabors, and tight end Brock Bowers, the Merry Men appear poised for more championships in the years to come. Could this be the start of a dynasty? Time will tell, but for now, the future looks incredibly bright.

Heartbreak for the Brothers

As for the Brothers, it was yet another season that ended in heartbreak, continuing their elusive search for the franchise’s first Super Bowl victory. Despite their valiant efforts, including a strong playoff run powered by Goff, St. Brown, and LaPorta, they fell just short of claiming their championship.

A Celebration for the Merry Men

For now, however, the spotlight is on the Merry Men and their Super Bowl XXXII triumph. With Steve Dugas at the helm, the team has once again proven that they are a force to be reckoned with in the YFFL. Whether this is the start of a championship dynasty or a one-time achievement, the Merry Men will enjoy their well-earned victory.

Congratulations to owner Steve Dugas and the Merry Men - Super Bowl XXXII champions!
